How I Went from Startup Co-Founder to Freelancer

In 2011 I co-founded a content management startup providing automated bespoke blog and social media posts to anyone who needed them, from tea shop owners to authors.

I worked with each client to determine posting frequency based on needs and budget, then found a writer with knowledge or interest in their subject. I found it was easier for writers to create engaging content when they were engaged. I saved writing for some accounts for myself when they shared my passions.

I onboarded all clients, established post standards, and hired and trained new writers and editors. I also pulled analytics and ran monthly check-in meetings with clients to optimize content strategies and increase retention.

Our self-funded startup eventually ran out of money, but I had fallen in love with content strategy and helping business owners. I kept my clients and continue to provide them with blogs, social media posts, and email marketing to this day.

How can I help you?

Alison Kawa

After earning a BFA focused on sculpture and painting, Alison taught herself how to code HTML and CSS. She translated this skill to email marketing, working her way up to becoming a well-rounded CRM marketer with experience in email, SMS, loyalty programs, push notifications, and direct mail. Along the way, she founded her own social media management startup and thrived as a freelance marketing strategist.
